Warm-up session
The 6km UTAR Balloon Run was held on 25 June 2016 by Sungai Long Campus’ Community Service Society (CSS) at Bandar Sungai Long. It was a charity run event which was organised in collaboration with the National Cancer Council Malaysia (Majlis Kanser Nasional, MAKNA). It aimed to raise funds for supporting the well-being of cancer patients and the awareness of cancer among UTAR students, as well as the wider community in Bandar Sungai Long.
Six-hundred seventy-eight participants ran in
this charity event. MAKNA representatives Reminreet Singh and Tarmizi were
invited to grace this event. Reminreet Singh extended his gratitude towards
UTAR for supporting their campaign to fight cancer and hoped this event
could help in raising public awareness towards cancer. He also hoped that
similar cooperation could be repeated in future and to bring benefit to the
community.
Opening Ceremony: Ribbon Cutting
Participants were led by Zumba dance instructor
Raiy to do warm-ups. Organising Chairperson Phua Chee Fang accompanied
Reminreet and Tarmizi to carry out the flagging off ceremony at 8am right
after the warm-ups. The opening consisted of a simple ribbon cutting
ceremony which released many colourful helium balloons to the sky.
The first runner, Barry Boey arrived at the
finishing line at 8.30am. DJ Zain Ong was invited to perform a musical
interlude at the finishing area to entertain all the finishers. Organising
Vice-Chairperson Yong Shyang Yeang presented certificates to the MAKNA
representatives during the closing ceremony. UTAR Balloon Run ended with the
participants writing their wishes on balloons before setting them free to
float up to the sky.
