On 15 July 2009, the External Examiner for UTAR Journalism programme, Assoc.
Prof. Dr. Janet Steele from the George Washington University School of Media
and Public Affairs, USA, conducted a workshop entitled 'Inter-Disciplinary
Research: Writing for Journal Publication' at UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus.
Dr. Steele started off the session by bringing up to date the different
kinds of academic publications and the manner in which they are published.
She also shared on the levels of credibility and exposure academics can get
out of the publication of their papers.
The workshop also enabled the participants to study the approaches of
writing academic papers deemed fit for conferences. . "If you want to write
about an issue, go for local issues as you are more knowledgeable of them.
They will be informative for your foreign readers, yet something that your
local readers can relate to," she said.
Dr. Steele pointed out examples of common misconceptions and mistakes
academics could make in their writing. "Do make sure that the examples or
theories you would like to put forward are relevant to the issues at hand.
How can the readers respond to your writing if you presented irrelevant
facts or theories to your writing?" she quipped.
She also shared tips on how to produce highly-credible publication. Among
them were, "Never forget to give credits where it's due. Nobody likes it
when their effort is not acknowledged," she emphasised.
The workshop was attended by lecturers from the Faculty of Creative
Industries (FCI).
Dr. Steele received her Ph.D. in History from the Johns Hopkins University,
and is especially interested in how culture is communicated through the mass
media.
