Talk on ICT uses in research

Mohd Nizam sharing the uses of ICT in research

Young researchers were inspired by Department of Commerce and Accountancy Senior Lecturer Mohd Nizam bin A. Badaruddin when he spoke on the “Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Research” at a talk organised by the Centre for Accounting, Banking and Finance (CABF) of the Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) on 15 July 2016 at Kampar Campus.

He encouraged young researchers to seize the opportunities provided by technological improvements over the last 50 years and educated them about the usefulness of ICT in fields that have benefitted from its advancement. The medical field, industrial automation, transportation, and the entertainment industry are examples of areas that have been making full use of ICT advancements.

Jumping on the bandwagon was the research field which has transformed UTAR, being a research focused university, into a conducive environment with easy access to vast information. The speaker also cited examples of researchers using data mining and internet databases for information gathering, without the hassle needed of physically visiting libraries, and software like spreadsheets to assist in their research projects.

Together with information on the convenience of ICT, the talk touched on the opportunities created by ICT that enables researchers to produce in-depth work, while opening doors for their research to be made global and to expand through joint international collaborations.

As the talk drew to its highpoint, the speaker placed emphasis on ICT advancements that have profited the education field by increasing the diversity of higher education systems and modes of delivery in teaching. According to the speaker, professionals in the education sector also benefit by having computer software to assist them with grammar checking, similarity checking, language translation, voice to text, and intuition to action.

UTAR is aware of such benefits and equips its library with resources such as online databases, SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, and journals to effectively facilitate its researchers. UTAR has also supported its research community through the setting up of the latest hardware and software infrastructure via collaborations with ICT industry leaders.
