Feng Chia University students and UTAR
representatives
Delegates from Taiwan’s Feng Chia University
visited Sungai Long Campus on 11 July 2016 for the “One-Week Summer Holiday
Programme”.
The delegates consisted of staff and lecturers
from kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, high schools,
universities, hotels, and the government sector in Taiwan who are currently
pursuing further education in Feng Chia University. The programme included
lectures on the history of Malaysian Chinese, development of Chinese
Education in Malaysia, Malaysia’s political and institutional environment,
social innovation and entrepreneurship, overview of ASEAN countries and
their economy.
Prof Chuah enthused, “Feng Chia University is a
partner of UTAR and I am glad that the One-Week Summer Holiday Programme can
be held successfully. I believe the delegates from Feng Chia University will
not encounter into language barriers because most Malaysian Chinese can
speak more than two languages, including dialects such as Min Nan and Hakka.
Outside of mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, Malaysia is the only
country which offers a complete Mandarin-medium education. I also believe
face-to-face communication is very important for us to develop our
interpersonal skills, moreover with today’s advanced technology allowing us
to keep in touch with friends anywhere, anytime.”
Prof Chuah presenting a token of appreciation to
Dr Hsu
Feng Chia University Asst Prof Dr Hsu Wei-Chieh
said, “This is the first time for most of the students to visit Malaysia and
they love Malaysia because it is a place with multi-ethnic and
multi-cultural place. This is the ideal location for us to study about the
varied cultures of various peoples in Southeast Asia. Besides that, I would
like to invite students and representatives of UTAR to visit Feng Chia
University in future.”
Feng Chia University student Peng Yi-Chieh said,
“I feel really thankful for everything that organised by the UTAR
representatives. This programme is so meaningful to us. We were really
surprised to see UTAR students reading books or revising homework all around
the campus as this is not commonly seen in Feng Chia University. On the
other hand, we learnt a lot during the One-Day Malacca trip where we saw the
historical buildings and sampled Malaysia’s famous cuisine. I will bring all
the knowledge and experiences that I have gained in Malaysia back to Taiwan
to share with my colleagues and friends.”
Feng Chia University student Chen Li-Ju said,
“This programme has brought us new inspiration and greater enlightment. We
were able to learn more about the history of Malaysian Chinese. I truly
admire the hardships endured by the forefathers of Malaysian Chinese to
succeed in building a new life in Southeast Asia. I also feel proud that
Malaysian Chinese continue to uphold the true spirit and traditions of
Chinese culture, while at the same time providing a complete Chinese
education system to all of Malaysia’s Chinese.”
