The VIPs and students in their new coats
The White Coat Ceremony is an annual tradition
marking the successful completion of the first MBBS year. The ceremony was
conducted on 2 June 2016 at the Multi-purpose Hall of Sungai Long Campus.
Present at the ceremony was Faculty of Medicine
and Health Sciences (FMHS) Dean Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng, Malaysian
Physicians for Social Responsibility President and Malaysian Medical Council
Member Dato’ Dr Abdul Hamid Abdul Kadir, FMHS lecturers, medical students,
and their respective families.
Dato' Abdul Hamid briefed on the history of the
white coat in the medical field. He said, “The white coat, as prescribed by
Hippocrates, obliges one to lead their lives and practice in an upright and
honourable manner. The meaning and function of a white coat is to signify
the wearer’s place in the hierarchy of medical professionals.” He also added
that after the students have taken the Oath of Commitment, they are bound to
a promise to uphold the sanctity of the medical profession as extolled by
peers and lecturers.
The ceremony concluded with the students taking
an oath led by Pang Kah Junn. Afterwards, professors from the FMHS cloaked
their students in their first white coat as a symbol of the trust being
bestowed upon them to carry on the noble tradition of health care.
Thirty-nine Year Two MBBS students received their
white coats and their parents were invited to witness this milestone step
into the medical profession. Both Year One MBBS and Year Three MBBS students
were invited to participate in this memorable ceremony as well. This
ceremony is an important event for the Year One MBBS student to look forward
to and the Year Three MBBS students to reflect on themselves one year after
doning the white coat.
