Thrilling theatre workshop

Following the success of two creative theatre workshops previously, UTAR’s Department of Languages and Linguistics (DLL) organised another workshop on 6 and 7 April 2016 at UTAR Kampar Campus.

The workshop, titled “Catch the Killer”, had a storyline that was set in an asylum where a group of lunatics, mental patients, and insane criminals were imprisoned. Each of the prisoners had a dark and mysterious past that ranged from committing hideous crimes to witnessing terrible acts of horror. Completely unscripted and improvised, the workshop consisted of student actors from diverse programmes ranging from Foundation to Engineering. The eight UTAR student actors; namely, Audrey Amanda, Kshitij Verma, Lai Wei Yang, Kalesh Linganathan, Ezra Lavanya, Keerthana Maran, Bernard Cheong Jia Choon, and Kiran Jacob delved into their deepest and darkest parts of their psyche by role playing as “inmates” before the 160-strong audience.

The audience, who also role played as visiting doctors, was tasked with discovering the secrets and identities of each “inmate” in their allocated stations. Moving from station to station, the audience interrogated the “prisoners” to receive cryptic clues that will help reveal the true nature of the prisoners.

This is the third interactive workshop-cum-performance conducted after the two previous workshops held in January and March. The workshop aimed to develop students’ performance skills and to generate interest in the theatrical arts amongst UTAR students. Promising students from these workshops will be handpicked to showcase their talents by performing in full-length theatre shows outside of UTAR and to participate in competitions.
