The Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) held its first student conference titled “Creative Industries Young Scholar Conference” on 13 April 2016. Thirty-three students participated in the conference which was judged in three categories, namely Still Images, Moving Images, and Academic Research presentation.

“The student conference aimed to inculcate a culture of research, innovation, and quality output that will be valuable in building their public speaking skills, their studies, and future careers,” FCI Dean Dr Chin Yee Mun said.

Graphic Design student Lee Yuan won the Still Images category for her project titled “Amadeus: Concept Illustration Art Book”. Her artwork consisted of classic Chinese Zodiac symbols converted into anthropomorphic beings or animals with human characteristics. She derived her inspiration from Nagamori and Nagabe art forms.

Game Design student Low Qing Huai won the Moving Images category for his game concept titled “Project Milk”. The game is based on school bullying and allows the player to take revenge against the bully.

“It is a simple game wherethe challenge is to beat the bad guy,” he said. The game’s prototype was developed with his two friends, Liew Wah Sheng and Joseph Chung Hong Giat, who contributed to the pixel art and game mechanics.

Meanwhile, Liew Xin Yi was selected as the best presenter for the Academic Research category, winning with her research paper titled “A Study on Mothers Employment Status and level of Maternal Involvement for Young Children”. She drew inspiration from her observation of how a working mother juggled between work and childcare.

“There is a positive relationship between mothers’ employment status and the level of maternal involvement with their children. Working mothers have higher maternal involvement because they have more access to information via the internet and interaction with working colleagues with children compared to stay-at-home mothers,” Liew said.
