ASHRAE Run 2016 was held at the University of Malaya (UM) on 30 October 2016. This is the second year the ASHRAE student chapters of UTAR and UM have collaborated in organising the run, which attracted over 1,000 participants.

The event consisted of two parts, the 5km and 10km run in the morning, and a company fair in the afternoon. The objective of the run was to promote a healthy lifestyle, while creating a platform for undergraduate students to explore different companies in industries relevant to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). After all, ASHRAE’s mission is to advance the arts and sciences of HVAC&R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) to serve humanity, to raise public awareness on industries that support green technology, and to promote a sustainable world.

A representative from Daikin Malaysia (DAMA) said, “This year’s event has improved from last year with more participants joining the run. We will support the event again next year as we believe that such events are an effective way to publicise our company while raising public awareness on green technology.”
Lee Nam Chuan, General Manager of Acson Malaysia, said, “The new route was harder compared to last year. The organising team did a great job making this event a success and I hope to see more sponsors in the future run. Participating in such events is important for companies from the aspect of corporate social responsibility. On the other hand, we are also glad that we are creating job opportunities for highly employable talent.”

John from Group MRMS, ASHRAE Run’s Official Event Service Provider, mentioned, “The organising committees of the two ASHRAE student chapters have good attitudes and were helpful throughout the planning of the event. The good planning and publicity resulted in an increase of participants compared to last year.”
“I came across ASHRAE and its cause through an acquaintance from UTAR. The event is successful in raising the awareness of green technology and its impact towards the public,” said Nicholas, who won the lucky draw prize.
The winners of the run
The 10km male category winner was Timothy George Bierma, while the 10km female category winner was Julie Ann Moore.
ASHRAE Run 2016 Chairman Jeff Choong said, “The participating companies put a lot of effort in providing students a platform to gain exposure and experience through mini games. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the organising team, sponsors, participants and ASHRAE Malaysia Chapter for making this event successful.”
