His Excellency Holger Michael, Ambassador of Germany, made a visit to UTAR Kampar Campus on 23 November 2016.
Receiving the ambassador on his maiden visit to the award-winning campus was UTAR Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, representing the UTAR president, along with Dean of UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) Assoc Prof Dr Yap Vooi Voon. Also present were FEGT Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes Dr Ng Choon Aun, FEGT Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Lo Po Kim, FEGT Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Tan Kok Tat, FEGT Head of Master of Engineering (Electronic Systems) programme Dr Teh Peh Chiong, and FEGT Department of Industrial Engineering’s Assoc Prof Dr Tan Kia Hock.
Introducing UTAR as a comprehensive not-for-profit private university offering over 110 programmes, Prof Lee highlighted UTAR’s strategic partnership with the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) Regensburg in offering twin Master’s degree programmes, which involves the mutual recognition of credit hours for both UTAR’s Master of Engineering (Electronic Systems) and also OTH Regensburg’s Master of Electrical and Microsystems Engineering. “The collaboration with OTH Regensburg is an attraction for the postgraduate programme due to the availability of student exchange between the two universities, and internship opportunities in Malaysia and Germany,” explained Prof Lee.
Echoing Prof Lee’s sentiment was Dr Yap, who visits OTH Regensburg on a regular basis to lecture on certain subjects. He said that the university also has active collaborations with Infineon Technologies, OSRAM, and Beckhoff Automation, which further solidifies UTAR’s relationship with university and industry partners from Germany.
Impressed by UTAR’s exponential growth in a span of 14 years, Michael expressed his keenness to learn about UTAR and its partnerships, and how the German Embassy Kuala Lumpur may help to facilitate the collaboration process with German organisations. “I know UTAR is a very prominent university in Malaysia. In fact, German universities are very open to collaborating with others and are keen in intensifying collaborations in the areas of education and vocational training,” said Michael. He added that the driver of Germany’s economic success is the co-operation among businesses, universities and research centres, which generated a high amount of patents, innovation and research results. Therefore, with almost 400 German companies in Malaysia, there will certainly be exciting prospects for university-industry collaboration.
The visit ended following a guided tour around FEGT which saw Michael visiting several well-equipped laboratories as well as learning about some research projects carried out by FEGT academics and students.
