UTAR received its first ranking of #111-120 by the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2017 on 16 March 2017. Then, on 5 April 2017, the Times Higher Education ranked UTAR #101-150 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017. UTAR was also ranked =14 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017: Millennial universities.
The performance indicators for both the THE Asia University Rankings 2017 and THE Young University Rankings 2017 are grouped into five areas indicated by THE as teaching, research, citation, international outlook and industry income. However, the methodology for young universities has been carefully recalibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities.
Despite taking part for the first time in the Times Higher Education Rankings, UTAR’s placing in the rankings reflected the immense efforts and strategies put in place by the University since its inception in 2002.
On the THE rankings obtained by the University, UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik commented that, “It is a recognition of Malaysia’s higher education especially for private higher education. Our Malaysian government liberalised the higher education sector and allowed the establishment of private universities (IPTS), giving us this opportunity to do our best. Therefore, we are thankful to the government and the Ministry of Higher Education. It is also a recognition to all UTAR believers, supporters and benefactors who contributed to the UTAR Education Foundation. Most importantly, it is a great encouragement for us all, especially our staff and students to excel further. Being a private not-for-profit university with great support from the community and public, we strive to keep our tuition fees affordable while providing our students with quality education that includes soft skills training and technical competencies.”
“The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2017 are based on 13 separate performance indicators in the areas of teaching, research, paper citation, knowledge transfer and international outlook. It is a pleasant surprise for us as we are only 15 years old, and we are thankful for the support from all and shall continue to work hard and improve ourselves. There are still a lot more to learn on best practices in the world such as international collaborations and R&D,” said Prof Chuah.
THE World University Rankings are the global performance tables that judge research intensive universities across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The Asia University Rankings use the same 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.
THE Young University Rankings, previously known as the THE 150 Under 50 Rankings, are a ranking of world’s top 200 universities under 50 years old. Institutions which demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer are featured in the list.
