Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) student Cheing Chin Siang was praised for handing over a purse he found on 9 March 2017 at the Sungai Long Campus. In recognition of his commendable act, UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik presented an appreciation letter to Chieng on 7 April 2017.
The Year-one Foundation student surrendered the lost item to the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) immediately after he found it at Block KA and returned the purse to its owner. According to DSS Head Lt Col Zainudin bin Mustaffa, the purse contained cash RM 277 and some other personal belongings.
Lt Col Zainudin said, “Cheing's honesty sets a good role model to other students. DSS provides lost and found service to all UTARians and occasionally release notifications on lost items through the Mail Master. However, students must be aware that they should lodge a report to DSS when similar cases happen.”
Besides, Department of Student Affairs Head for Sungai Long Campus Loh Nyuk Leung, urged the students to take care of their belongings on campus. “This incident is a timely reminder for our students to always keep an eye on their personal belongings. It is their responsibility to be more aware of the surroundings and never leave their belongings unattended,” said Loh.
