“It is very important to know what Public Relations (PR) field is and be prepared mentally before you become a PR practitioner,” said speaker and Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) lecturer Aruna Raj, at the “Public Relations (PR): What and Why?” talk organised by the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) Kampar on 26 July 2017 at the Kampar Campus.
Present at the talk were CFS Deputy Director for Student Affairs and Development Lim Khiew Loon, staff and students.
With the talk aimed to provide the participants with insights about PR and its role, Aruna elucidated that a PR practitioner must carry out effective two-way communication between an organisation and the public through the use of various communication methods. Hence, she highlighted that a PR practitioner’s role is to build bridges of understanding, goodwill and to create awareness among the public on the message that the organisation wishes to convey.
Aruna also mentioned that good communication skill alone is insufficient for one to be a good PR practitioner because a good writing skill is equally important for one to excel in a PR career, who then shared information about the job prospects of PR and outlined some guidelines to becoming a successful PR practitioner.
Apart from the talk aimed at helping participants to gain better knowledge and understanding of PR as their future career, Aruna also hoped that the talk will nurture the participants with the right PR mindset, along with FAS’s degree programmes, in order to fully develop intellectual and personal skills, and realise their true potential for the PR industry.
She continued by highlighting some of the common mistakes made in press releases, and shared how social networking sites and PR are strongly connected and its importance. She also encouraged the participants to be honest, innovative and creative, in order to stand out from their competitors especially in the current competitive employment market.
The talk then ended with an interactive Q&A session, followed by a certificate presentation by Lim to Aruna as a token of appreciation.
