UTAR Peer Helping Programme organised the Peer Helper Study Trip to
Guilin University of Technology (GUT), China from 9 till 16 October
2017. Fifty peer helpers and two staff from UTAR Sungai Long
Campus and Kampar Campus joined the study tour which lasted for eight
days.
The study trip aimed to help peer helper to enhance peer helping skills
and to build their personal development such as self-esteem,
self-confident and social relationship with other cultural groups. Apart
from that, the study trip encouraged students to gain new experience and
knowledge about counselling services from other countries and enhanced
the bonding relationship between UTAR, universities and community centre
from another country.
GUT organised various activities for UTAR students such as Expressive
Arts Therapy, Community Project at Longyin Elementary School as a
one-day teacher, teambuilding, campus tour and sightseeing at tourist
attraction such as Elephant Hill Park, Round city water system, West
Street and Li River cruise.
Students were exposed to the techniques used in the Expressive Art
Therapy which encourage self-expression, self-awareness and
interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. Further to that, GUT
arranged an interaction opportunity among their local and international
student with UTAR students to gain knowledge about diverse cultures
relating to counselling. Additionally, UTAR students participated in
GUT team building activities to forge stronger relationship aside from
gaining experience and knowledge which enhanced their soft skills and
personal developments.
