Banu playing the Sitar
Everyone possesses unique skills and talents, and that is what makes
each one stand out in their own special way. People have skills in areas
such as playing an instrument, playing sports, being artistic, acting,
singing, and many more. However, the world becomes a better place when
it is used to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
“People may realise their talents at different stages in their lives,”
said Institute of Postgraduate Studies & Research Assistant Manager
Banu. Banu developed her interest to play the Sitar, an Indian musical
instrument which is used to create Indian classical music, in the year
2015 and Odissi,
one of the pre-eminent classical dance forms of India, in the year 2016.
Despite having no background knowledge of dance and music, she
persisted to find a way to learn both. Banu said, “I had to do some
research before enrolling myself for the Sitar lesson because I had no
foundation in music. Therefore, to get a better understanding of music I
signed up for the Carnatic music class as well, which complemented the
Sitar lesson. So when I first began to play the Sitar and practice the Odissi,
I struggled a lot, but eventually, I managed to find my way around it.”
Besides creating an opportunity for self-advancement, playing the Sitar
also helps Banu to cope with daily stress. “The melodious sound produced
by the vibration really calms me. What benefits me the most is I make
myself happy, at the same time, I also get a chance to learn a new skill
and improve myself,” enthused Banu as she continued, “The most important
part of learning a new skill or undergoing training is the sense of
achievement you will feel when you move forward. Moreover, the
whole process of learning is rewarding and interesting, and you can gain
insights into your own capabilities and character.”
She added, “Giving back to the community by sharing the skill I have is
what makes the difference. True talent is expressed through the sheer
joy of doing it, not praise, recognition, or validation. When you
express your talents, you create joy and fulfilment in yourself and for
others.God has given us all a gift of unique skills and talents. We can
come together and use our gifts to help our families, communities and
the world. We can make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
With that in mind, Banu now hopes to perform for the public for the
purpose of charity. At a recent event, she performed at the Temple of
Fine Arts situated in Kuala Lumpur for the Navarathiri event.
According to Banu, she is glad that she is able to use her talent to
make a positive difference, not only in her life but others as well.
