Talk on 2018 National Budget Proposals

The Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) and the Centre for Extension Education (CEE) co-organised a talk at the Kampar Campus on 16 December 2017 on the topic “2018 National Budget Proposals” that was also recently tabled in the Parliament.

The objective of the talk was to enable the participants to gain an in-depth analysis and fresh perspectives on the 2018 Budget Proposals. The participants also attained insights about pertinent policy changes, its implications and understanding on how these policies will impact businesses. The talk also aimed to provide participants with the latest development of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and information on pressing issues for businesses.

Themed ‘Prospering an inclusive economy, balancing between worldly and hereafter for the wellbeing of the Rakyat towards the TN50 Aspiration’, invited speaker and FBF lecturer Tan Swee Kiow explained how the proposals affect their organisations and themselves personally.

She mentioned that taxation-related proposals included reducing personal tax rates, increasing Government contributions for self-employed individuals who participated in the 1Malaysia Retirement Scheme, exemption of rental income from residential properties and income tax exemption for up to 12 months for women returning to work after two years.

She also shared about the non-tax proposal’s benefits, which included increasing maternity leave up to 90 days for the private sector and the requirement for childcare facilities in new buildings. Meanwhile, proposal affecting companies and business included new tax incentives for adopting advanced technology and automation, the hiring of disabled employees and also incentives to promote health-tourism in Malaysia.
