The Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus organised a talk titled “Life as an Accountant and an Academic” on 8 December 2017 at its Sungai Long Campus.
Invited to give the talk was Faculty of Accountancy and Management lecturer Ang Soon Yong. The talk aimed to enlighten the students on how to choose their career path in the future. It was attended by more than 40 students.
Before graduating, Ang applied for a job in one of the four big accountancy firms, the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Being a first-class degree holder, Ang thought he was capable of doing anything, so he applied for a position at the audit department. However, due to stress and the loss of interest in the audit field, Ang quickly dropped off from his work. “It’s important to know what you can do, and what your interest is. You need to know that you are in the correct pathway when you are pursuing your dreams,” Ang explained

Ang continued to explain how he switched from being an accountant to being an academic. When he was working for the IBM Company, he had more free time in hand, so he decided to work as a part-time tuition teacher in Universiti Malaya (UM) during the weekends. That was his first step into the academic field. In the meantime, he was sponsored by his Head of Department to pursue his Masters in business administration (accounting).
Ang also shared his experience of working with the big companies and small firms. “Working in a big company gives you recognition and makes you stand out among other graduates. You can also acquire technical skills. In a small firm, you can gain knowledge other than your expertise such as social skills, marketing skills, and so on,” he added.
One of the students, M. Daveen Kumar said, “The talk was really enlightening as it taught us how to choose our path and make decisions in the future.
The talk ended with the presentation of token of appreciation to Ang by CFS (Sungai Long Campus) Head of Management and Accountancy Department Goy Ling Ling.
