Prof Chuah said, “UTAR set up its FMHS in 2009. The faculty offers programmes encompassing bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.” Emeritus Prof Cheong added, “The undergraduate students are required to attend clinical postings or industrial trainings which complement the basic courses in their respective field of study in order to provide them with industrial exposure. Meanwhile, our pioneer batch of Doctor of Philosophy for Medical Sciences postgraduates graduated last year.”

“UTAR is one of the very few higher learning institutions in Malaysia training qualified practitioners with its Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (Hons) in recognition of the growing demand for qualified TCM practitioners. The programme is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education and we are also the first teaching institution officially granted to offer bilingual (English and Mandarin) TCM bachelor’s degree programme in the country. The pioneer batch of Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (Hons) students graduated in August 2016,” said Dr Te.

Legislator Chung mentioned, “ASEAN countries’ medical development and quality are among our main concerns. It is also our goal to establish amicable relationships with these countries with medical education as a basis to boost mutual understanding and interaction. Among ASEAN countries, Malaysia is the country that possesses the greatest potential to be a successful medical hub in ASEAN. This is because one of the strengths of Malaysians is that most are multilinguals and are familiar with a multicultural community.”

Other topics discussed include Malaysian tertiary education for medical and health sciences, traditional Chinese Medicine in Malaysia, traditional and complementary medicine and medical tourism.
