Brightening school with murals

Volunteers from Global Art Sungai Long branch, CFS and SJK (C) Bandar Sungai Long

The Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus collaborated with Global Art Sungai Long branch to paint sports-themed murals at SJK (C) Bandar Sungai Long as part of their community service project from 27 to 29 December 2016. The project aimed to create a pleasant, beautiful and motivational environment for students of the school, as well as to develop the students’ creativity through arts.

The finished murals

“This mural is located on the right side of the wall at the main building. Prior to this, other murals located on the left side of the wall at the main building and the guardhouse’s walls had already been completed a few months ago,” said Project Leader Liang Chooi Ling.

Volunteers painting the murals

The outlines of the murals were mainly sketched by Global Art Sungai Long branch’s owner Amanda Siew and Foundation student Tan Thay Kar, while the other volunteers assisted in painting them.

“Most of the students only had basic painting skills. From this experience, they learned more about toning, shading, outlining, as well as mixing and matching colours. After going through the experience, some students realised their hidden talents and were excited to explore more opportunities in the arts,” Liang said.

Laing also praised the students’ commitment and dedication in carrying out the tasks, as well as showing good team spirit throughout the project. This project also provided an opportunity for UTAR students to act as caring and responsible citizens.

Opening in March 2016, SJK (C) Bandar Sungai Long currently accommodates about 600 students from Standard One to Three. The school anticipates a higher enrolment for 2017 and will be ready to enrol students in Standard Four and Five by then.
