The “Eternal Chinese Cultural Night” was graced by Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Perwakilan Penduduk Zon 10 Majlis Daerah Kampar Chai Suet Yen representing the Deputy Minister of Finance Dato’ Lee Chee Leong. She was accompanied by UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Ling Liong Ngo, Advisor of CLS-cum-tutor at Faculty of Business and Finance Wan Pui Yee and the Organising Chairperson of Eternal Chinese Cultural Night Ang Teck Chee.

Chai in her speech said, “The Chinese treasures their culture as they believe it to be a precious gift. The language Mandarin is used to understand not only the national characteristics of the Chinese community, but the cultural aspects as well. In today’s era, Mandarin has become a powerful agent to boost competitiveness, thus, its influence and advantages should not be ignored. Apart from educational excellence, students should also give importance to soft skills, cultural aspects and other learning abilities. Cultural and traditional qualities may help the students to foster moral values and ethics in their lives.”

Prof Choong in his speech said, “We should be proud of our cultural values. Chinese cultures are rich and it is immanent in all the parts of the world. And for that, we should thank our ancestors for their unsparing effort to spread the values nationwide. I am very proud of today’s cultural integration performances that were performed by our students tonight. The performances brought out the essence of the Chinese culture.” He also congratulated all the committee members for making the event a success.

Ang in his speech said, “The Eternal Chinese Cultural Night was aimed to promote the uniqueness of Chinese culture to the students as well as the community in order to raise awareness of traditional Chinese arts among the younger generation. I also would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the organising committee members for your unlimited support, hard work and teamwork shown throughout the planning and the execution of this programme. It is indeed a proud moment for all the members of Chinese Language Society for successfully organising such a mega event for the very first time in eight years of its establishment.”

The night, which was officially held for the first time in Kampar, was also aimed to create a platform for the students to hone and share their talents, as well as to gather the new intake students and integrate them into the UTAR family.

The event commenced with an uplifting 24 Festive Drum performance, a Chinese classical drum show pulled off by the UTAR Wushu Club members, echoing the night’s vision and goal. This was followed by a captivating Chinese traditional dance from the UTAR CLS students. The night was further enlivened by a Diabolo performance as well as a Chinese traditional flag dance. The night also offered an assortment of vocal, dance and instrumental acts which were well-received by the audience, even more so when an aspiring local theatre director Jason Ong directed two dramas titled “我的世界超级不完美直到那天早上 (wo de shi jie chao ji bu wan mei zhi dao na tian zao shang)”, a story about a mother who is keen to save the environment; and “Da De Sheng”, a story of comparison between two generations, the traditional and the contemporary.

The night ended with an impressive short film, dedicated and produced by the organising committee to mark the celebration of Father’s Day.
