Present at the event were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, UTARSLCO conductor and advisor Dr Goh Hong Lip, UTAR Sungai Long Choir Unit Coach Osamu Moroe and UTAR Alumni Association of Malaysia Vice President Nurul Izwazi Binti Mohd Nor.
UTARSLCO was established on June 2015 by a group of UTAR students who share the same passion towards traditional Chinese music. The instruments in the orchestra were divided into five main categories, namely the bowed strings, plucked strings, wind, bass and percussion. Dr Goh was invited to be the very first instructor and advisor on 2016. This concert, however, is organised to present a whole new image and to change the traditional mindset of the public towards Chinese music by performing different types of music styles.
Among the songs that were performed were “Fantasy of Kavalan”, “Custom of Ban Na”, “Childhood Memories”, “Grasshopper meets Rooster”, “Typhoon War”, “Three Tunes”, “Mombasa”, “Insensibly”, “Dota 2”, “Danza Kuduro” and “Eye of The Tiger”.
UTAR Choir Unit performed two songs titled “Cantate Domino” and “Telu No Uta” during the concert. Moreover, the audience was surprised when UTARSLCO collaborated with the Choir Unit to perform a famous patriotic song “Sejahtera Malaysia”. One of the event highlights was the dramatic-devised-atmosphere the audience felt when they were taken on a journey into a haunted house set- up scene, supplemented with some gloomy, spooky, and intense music rhythms when UTARSLCO performed ‘Insensibly’.
“Infinity” Chinese Orchestra Concert 2017 Chairperson Roger Goh Qi Lun expressed his gratitude to everyone for their kind support and presence. He said, “It is my great pleasure to thank all the sponsors and the public for the monetary, in-kind and mental support for our event, so that our concert can be organised very smoothly. UTARSLCO does not only aim to provide a better platform for Chinese musical instrument lovers to learn, swap and showcase their skills and talents but also to break the traditional stereotype towards the Chinese orchestra among the public.”
In the opening speech, Prof Chuah remarked, “We are united by music tonight, which is the only universal language and transcending ideology. Education in the university is a pretty broad concept that surpasses the four walls of a classroom. Tonight’s event provides the students with a platform to showcase their talents and develop their personalities.”
The concert ended with the song “Stranger In The North” – “漂向北方”, a popular song composed by local artist Namewee and rearranged by Dr Goh.
