The Institute of Management and Leadership Development (IMLD) hosted a one-week summer programme for 19 Master’s students of Feng Chia University (FCU) from 9 July to 16 July 2017.

The closing ceremony for the programme was held on 13 July 2017 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. Present at the ceremony were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, FCU Centre for Teaching and Learning Resource Executive Officer cum Graduate Institute of Public Affairs and Social Innovation Assoc Prof Dr Teng Chun-Wen, IMLD Director Prof Cheng Ming Yu, as well as programme participants from FCU and representatives from UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management and Institute of Chinese Studies.

The summer programme for the FCU postgraduates encompassed a wide range of trainings including the history of Malaysian Chinese, the development of Chinese education in Malaysia, the political environment and political system in Malaysia, social innovation and social enterprise, and an overview of ASEAN and the ASEAN economic community.

Besides, there was also an interaction session between the programme participants and UTAR students to allow the exchange of ideas. During the one-week programme, the participants also visited a few primary and secondary schools, as well as many other historical and famous sites in Malaysia to explore more about Malaysia.

Prof Chuah said, “International exposure is a significant aspect of learning. I am grateful that UTAR and FCU have come together to work on many projects and programmes for the students from both universities. I am glad to know that this programme is another success that enabled the students to learn more about the Malaysian culture and explore the uniqueness of Malaysia.”

“FCU and UTAR have maintained a good partnership throughout the years. The summer programme enabled us to learn more about Malaysia particularly its education system and social development. As much as we have learned from UTAR, I would like to invite more UTAR students to come over to FCU. I sincerely look forward to more collaborations with UTAR in the future,” said Dr Teng.

Speaking on behalf of the participants at the closing ceremony, Juang Yi-Shiou enthused, “It was an eye-opening experience during our stay in Malaysia. Through the programme, we have developed better understanding towards the Malaysian education system and economy. I am also glad that we were able to learn more about other ASEAN countries besides Malaysia. Being able to interact and make friends with the UTAR students also enabled me to learn from peers and understand the local culture better.”
