Start-up founders share their stories

Aw and Tan during the sharing session

The Entrepreneurship and Management Club jointly organised a talk titled “Start-up, not a dream” with the Department of Consultancy and Commercialisation at Sungai Long Campus on 24 February 2017.

The two invited speakers were Eddie Tan, founder and baker of Cake Tella, and Aw Tai Hau, who cofounded handmade eyewear maker Pott Glasses. The objective of the talk was to help students to prepare themselves for the challenges of career advancement and to explore their unlimited potential.

Both speakers spoke about the challenges in starting a business, revolving around several common factors such as time, cost, risk and manpower. Apart from that, the speakers counselled the students that sharing start-up ideas among entrepreneurs is a good way of sourcing alternative viewpoints, insights and solutions. Do not be shy of sharing your ideas for your business venture as ideas alone are not worth anything, unless the execution of the concept is done properly.

In Tan’s sharing session, he said, “You need to know your strengths and leverage it while making good judgments after thorough research. Don’t give up if you fail. Just look forward towards a better future.”

When asked about the challenges Aw faced through the journey of his business, Aw replied, “After sales service is very crucial to any business as it correlates to customer loyalty. Besides earning profit, I strongly believe in undertaking corporate social responsibility as to give back to society. True success will show when enough effort is being put into the business.”

The talk was followed by a Q&A session with the participants and photography session before the event adjourned.
