Study visit by GAI

It was an opportunity to foster greater understanding of Malaysia’s development, with the purpose to align with the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, when the Institute of Management and Leadership Development (IMLD) hosted the Guangxi Administration Institute’s (GAI) study visit from 21 to 25 February 2017. The delegates from GAI were Prof Zhao Yuhua, Prof Liu Wenjuan, Assoc Prof Tan Yingjun and Assoc Prof Liu Bei.

Apart from fostering understanding, the visit also aimed to exchange ideas on the strategic roles of Malaysia and China for the OBOR initiative. For that, IMLD also organised visits to the History and Ethnography Museum, Melaka Gateway, UTAR Sungai Long Campus, Kuala Lumpur (KL) City Gallery and Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP).

At the History and Ethnography Museum located in the historic Stadthuys building, GAI delegates saw exhibits on Malacca’s customs and traditions that gave them a glimpse of Malacca’s development from historical times to the present day. Later on, they visited the Melaka Gateway, a tourism-cum-commercial development project spearheaded by KAJ Development Sdn Bhd, where they were briefed by its Strategic Communications Manager Teh Boon Tong on the gateway’s progress.

On the next day, the GAI delegates were taken to visit UTAR Sungai Long Campus and were warmly welcomed by IMLD Director Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu, Faculty of Accountancy and Management’s Head of MBA/MBA (Corporate Governance) programmes Dr Pok Wei Fong and Lecturer Assoc Prof Dr Law Kian Aun, Faculty of Creative Industries Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Aloysius Yapp, Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies (TCLC) Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Chin Yee Mun and Centre for International Studies Senior General Manager Dr Stephen Leong Mun Yoon.

A meeting commenced with Prof Cheng’s welcoming address and a presentation of UTAR’s corporate video. Yapp also took the time to speak about his project the “Iban Longhouse VR Walkthrough - Culture and Heritage Preservation by New Media”, which proposed ideas for utilising new media for possible collaborations on the OBOR initiative.

Dr Chin, on the other hand, introduced TCLC’s background and its research areas, while Dr Leong spoke on ASEAN relations, and Dr Pok spoke on her research in the areas of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the timber industry.

The visit at UTAR ended following a meeting with UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik.

After the visit to UTAR, the delegates made their way to the KL City Gallery to study the history, facts and development of KL. The delegates saw the highlight of the gallery, which is the spectacular KL City Model that showcases the city’s past, present and future through advanced multimedia projection mapping on the model.

On the final day, the delegates visited MCKIP and had fruitful discussions with Alliance Steel (M) Sdn Bhd, East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group and Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd. The delegates also had a quick tour of the construction site and Kuantan port.
