UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus organised a
talk titled “Applied Microbiology: Applications of Endophytic Fungi and
Lignocellulolytic Fungi” on 1 November 2017 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
Dr Tong Kim Suan from the Faculty of Science (FSc) was invited to
deliver the informative talk on Endophytic fungi and Epiphyte fungi. The
one and half hour talk gave the audience a better understanding about
the different types of fungus, the uses of fungus in our daily life and
also findings about Endophytic fungi and Epiphyte fungi.
According to Dr Tong, microbiology is the study of microscopic
organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. These
microbes play key roles in nutrient cycling, biodegradation,
biodeterioration, climate change, food spoilage, the cause and control
of disease, and biotechnology. Microbes can be put to work in many ways,
namely making life-saving drugs, the manufacture of biofuels, cleaning
up pollution, and producing or processing food and drink.
“Most of the natural products from endophytes are antibiotics,
anticancer agents and bioactive compounds,” said Dr Tong. He went on to
share information about the isolation of endophytic fungi from orchids
and showed some samples of Endophytic Fungi to the talk participants. He
explained about Epiphyte fungi and fermentation of rice husk and rice
straw before ending his talk.
The talk ended with a certificate presentation to Dr Tong by CFS
Director Tan Lee Siew as a token of appreciation.
