UTAR Corporate Communication final year students from the Faculty of
Creative Industries organised an outreach programme named POSITHIV on 11
November 2017 at Rumah
Solehah, a shelter home that concerns about the welfare of women,
children and orphans. The main objective of the programme was to provide
more opportunity for the residents of Rumah
Solehah to obtain extra income other than the
traditional means as well as to equip them with income-generating skills
that would help them to be financially independent.

The outreach programme was graced by EXCO member of Rumah

Abd Hamid and UTAR’s Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) Deputy Dean
Raduan bin Sharif. Also present at the event were FCI Department of Mass
Communication Head Dr Lim Chai Lee, Master of Communication Programme
Head Dr Tham Jen Sern, POSITHIV Project Advisor Jullian Khor Gee Khing,
Project Manager Fum Qi Teng, Rumah
Solehah Project Coordinator Fathiiah Hamzah, and
project committee members.
In her speech, Fadzilah said, “We do not want fish, we want to learn how
to fish. In my discussion with the POSITHIV, during the planning stage
of the programme, I told them that I hope to find and provide a way for
the residents of Rumah
Solehah to sustain themselves financially.”
Raduan expressing his gratitude to the sponsor and participants
“I am very proud and grateful to UTAR’s Corporate Communication students
for organising such a unique event and contributing back to the society.
UTAR is glad to have students that are socially responsible and concern
for the welfare of others. I am very sure that these students will
become valuable assets to the Malaysian society and be the next
generation of leaders that will guide all of us into the future,” said
Raduan at the opening ceremony.

A mock cheque worth RM5,000, collected by POSITHIV through a string of
fundraising activities and donation drives, was also presented by Raduan
during the ceremony to Rumah
Solehah. Moreover, a soap-making workshop was organised for
theresidents of Rumah
Solehah, with the purpose to teach and encourage them
to produce their own handmade soap and sell it for an extra income. The
workshop served as a platform to expose them to various soap-making
techniques ranging from making soap bar from base ingredients, melting
and moulding techniques, decorating and designing the soap bar.
Prior to the soap-making workshop, the organising student committee of
POSITHIV went all out by personally learning how to make the soap bars
so that they can personally teach the residents and they also structured
a marketing plan tailored to the needs of Rumah
Solehah.
