It was certainly extra fun for 65 SRJK (C) Jeram students when they
participated in the “Extra English Camp 7.0”, conducted by 19 UTAR
pre-service teachers, held on 25 November 2017 at the school. The
students were from the Standard Three to Standard Six classes.
With the objective of the camp to inculcate the four essential skills,
namely reading, writing, speaking and listening, in the students to
master English, various fun activities were carried out to facilitate
the students in their English learning process.
UTAR, steadfast to its principle “By the people, For the people”, also
held this camp as part of their community service effort under the
Department of Languages and Linguistics (DLL) of the Faculty of Arts and
Social Science (FAS), with hopes to be able to offer a learning
experience that will instil UTAR students involved with consciousness of
their role with a strong sense of professional and social
responsibility.
Involved in making the English camp an educational experience for the
students also included camp facilitators who are undergraduate students
from the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English Language and Bachelor of Arts
(Hons) English Education programmes; and four DLL lecturers and members
of the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), namely Ooi Zao May, A.
Avene a/p Atputharaj, Viji a/p Ramamuruthy and Nurullashkeen binti Mohd
Anis.
Activities, such as Ladder
Builder, Guess My Name, I Am A GPS, English Is Fun, Say Anything, Rome
Wasn’t Built In A Day and Act
Like A Star, kept the students entertained and saw their active
participation towards learning English.
“I enjoyed the camp very much because I was able to learn something in
every activity and even learnt new words,” said Standard Six student
Chai Jie Ling. Meanwhile, her other friend Ng Li Ping mentioned that the
camp has enabled her to learn new words and strengthened her friendships
with other students.
Apart from benefiting the school students, UTAR English Education
student Edwin Chih E Khang mentioned that he too was able to learn many
things from the camp.
“I am very happy to be part of this camp because it has not only taught
the school students, but it has taught me too. Through this camp, I was
able to use my abilities to create something meaningful and beneficial
for the students. Not to mentioned that the students were easy to teach
and I definitely had fun sharing knowledge with them. I believed the
camp has made me more determined to building up my personal character
and motivated me to never give up on my dreams”, said Chih.
At the end of the camp, all the students were presented with a notebook
and a highlighter as an appreciation for their participation, and also
as a handy tool for the students to use in the classroom lessons in
school.
