The Centre for Research on Communicable Diseases (CRCD) and the Centre
for Extension Education hosted the Food Safety and Rapid Testing
Workshop at the UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 12 October 2017.
According to CRCD Chairperson Prof Dr Ngeow Yun Fong, the main objective
of the workshop was to raise awareness about food safety among the
public as well as the medical practitioners. She said, “UTAR has
launched projects related to food hygiene. Through today’s workshop, we
hope to collaborate with other universities to work on other research
projects in an effort to further promote food safety and hygiene.”
There were two talks at the first session of the workshop. Kuan Chee Hao
from the Department of Agricultural and Food Science of UTAR Faculty of
Science spoke on “Epidemiology of Food Contamination with Drug
Residues”. Kuan’s talk focused on the husbandry management, veterinary
drugs, effects of antibiotic residues in food, and the authorities
monitoring food safety in Malaysia as well as some case studies on food
contamination in the country.
The subsequent talk was “Rapid Detection in China” by Yan Yiyong, the
Research and Development Deputy Director of Shenzhen Bioeasy
Biotechnology Co., Ltd, China. In his talk, he provided a brief overview
of international standards and demonstrated rapid detection of
antibiotics in food. Yan emphasised, “Food standards are tremendously
important in that standards set by the authorities will help to ensure
the food are safe for consuming.”
Following the talks were the roundtable discussions and presentations
for sharing and exchanges related to food safety and rapid testing.
Present at the workshop were invited guests from Management & Science
University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia
and Universiti Selangor. The workshop also saw the presence of members
from UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Faculty of Science
as well as researchers, academics and medical practitioners.
