MHSS volunteers lending hands and spreading love to the old folks
A team of staff and students from the Medical and Health Sciences
Society (MHSS) visited the Kim Loo Ting Old Folks’ Home in Setapak,
Kuala Lumpur on 23 September 2017.
The purpose of the visit was to encourage the MHSS members to volunteer
and contribute to the community. In view of the objective, the team of
nine students visited the old folks’ home in collaboration with the
Centre for Community Outreach.
The team arrived at the venue in the morning and greeted all the elderly
through an interactive session. Later, the volunteers divided themselves
into three groups to clean the old folks’ home. Besides cleaning, some
students also serenaded the elderly with old Chinese songs.
The chairman and the coordinator of the visit Khoo Er Hau said, “Being
around helping these older generation is one beautiful humble experience
enriched with gratefulness.” “It was a memorable experience spending
time with the elderly, and making their living environment a more
conducive and comfortable place to live in,” said another student
volunteer Teo Jin Yan. Meanwhile, another student Kong Eu Jinn added,
“The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.”
The old folks from Kim Loo Ting Old Folks’ Home expressed appreciation
towards the volunteers from UTAR. One of the elderly, Siew Kuen said, “I
am very happy and satisfied that these young people are willing to offer
their help to clean our home and spend their time to accompany us. Their
kindness truly brightened up my day.”
