Mathematics and Science Fair (MSF) 2017 was organised by UTAR Centre for
Foundation Studies (CFS) on 12 October 2017 at Sungai Long Campus. It
was an annual event, which aimed to outline one-day mathematics
activities and games, and science demonstration for the UTARians.
It also aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and interest in mathematics
and sciences, provide educational experience and fun through
participation in mathematics games and science demonstration, and create
awareness of the importance of mathematics and sciences application in
daily life among all the UTARians.
MSF 2017 Organising Chairperson, who is also CFS lecturer Lily Lee Pei
Lin said, “STEM education emphasises on learner-centred activities and
provides hands-on and minds-on activities, which makes the learning
process among the youth more fun, interesting and effective. With such
an effective learning, they will not merely understand the basic
concepts, but also able to apply it in their daily lives. STEM education
develops critical thinkers, problem solvers, also increases science
literacy and enables the next generation of innovators. ”
Sungai Long Campus CFS Director Melissa Stefanie Netto thanked the
organising committee for putting in a great effort on organising such a
meaningful event for the students and said, “I hope the participants
learnt mathematics and sciences in a very interesting way. Mathematics
and sciences are not only theory. We must learn how to apply them in our
daily life practically.”
A mathematics competition, named MF2 Challenge
1.0 was also held on the same day. The competition mainly tested
students on the logical thinking and simple mathematics calculation.
