A group of visitors from Jiaying University, China visited Kampar Campus on 27 August 2017. The group named as “Jiaying University-Malaysia Cultural Exchange Group” took the opportunity to visit several famous places in Malaysia.
The visit aimed to provide the visitors with a better understanding of the multiethnic and the multicultural customs in Malaysia, history of Malaysia’s Meizhou immigrants, community and their future generations, field studies on the tin mining industry and new villages, and exchange meeting with Meizhou’s clan and association during their one-week visit in Malaysia.
The visitors were Vice Secretary of Jiaying University’s Communist Youth League Committee-cum-Head of delegation Gao Hua-shan, Deputy Dean of School of Foreign Languages He Jia-ju, Chief of International Exchange and Cooperation Office Wen Gang-ming, lecturers from School of Physical Education Xu Xiao-rong and School of Music Xiao Jin-yong, and 25 students.
The visitors were cordially welcomed by UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Deputy Dean Assoc Prof Dr Wong Wun Bin and Persatuan Moy Yong Hui Kampar President Phan Yau Yin, accompanied by ICS Student Development and Industrial Training Deputy Dean Dr Ling Liong Ngo, Postgraduate Programme Head Dr Tan Beng Piou, Department of Chinese Studies (Kampar Campus) Head Toh Teong Chuan, Centre for Chinese Studies Chinese Art Research Unit Head Dr Lim Chee Men and students.

A welcome luncheon was held at the Grand Kampar Hotel. Staff and students from both institutions had some information exchange on issues related to education, culture, ancestral home, learning and programme.
Dr Wong in his address expressed his warmest welcome to all the visitors from Jiaying University and gave a brief introduction about UTAR and its relationship with Meizhou City People’s Government (MCPG), where Jiaying University was located. He said, “UTAR and MCPG officially inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last year at our Kampar Campus and apart from that, UTAR annually offers five UTAR-Meizhou Student Scholarships for outstanding students in Meizhou City and is looking forward to more mutually beneficial cooperation and collaboration with MCPG on Hakka Cultural Studies in the future.”

The visiting group made a trip to various famous spots at Kampar Campus, such as Dewan Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, UTAR Gallery, Bronze Sculptures, Bird Sanctuary, Library and other attraction spots. Through the UTAR Gallery’s guided tour, the visitors gained a deeper understanding of the Malaysia’s founding history, ethnic and cultural background, and establishment and development of UTAR.

Jiaying University is a public provincial undergraduate university located in Meizhou, Guangdong, China, which grew out of the Women’s Normal School, established in 1913. The University named Meizhou City was formerly known as Jiaying City during the Qing Dynasty. The University, which has the features of being rooted to the Hakka homeland, serves mountainous areas and promotes Hakka culture. Its Hakka Research Institute is a key provincial-level research base in humanities and social sciences as well as the research base of Guangdong Hakka studies. Its School of Hakka Studies is also the first of its kind in China.
