Visit and MoU signing

UTAR Planning and Development Committee Advisor Tan Sri Hew See Tong along with UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat, and Institute of Chinese Studies Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei visited Meizhou, Guangdong, China from 25 to 29 March 2018.

On 26 March 2018, UTAR delegates signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jiaying University (JYU), located in Meizhou. Topics discussed included mutual collaborations on academic staff and student exchange, research activities, credits recognition, research and inheritance of Hakka culture and postgraduate studies. Also present at the MoU signing ceremony were JYU Secretary Qiu Xiaohong, Chancellor Qiu Guofeng, and Vice Chancellors Xue Fangcun, Luo Jiawen, Yuan Duo, Zhang Lixia.

Led by Tan Sri Hew, who is also the Honorary Chairman of Meizhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the UTAR delegates met The People’s Government of Meizhou Municipality Vice Mayor Zhang Chen on 27 March 2018. Zhang thanked Tan Sri Hew, UTAR Education Foundation Board of Trustees Member Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and Perak Kaying Association for the support. UTAR annually offers UTAR-Meizhou Student Scholarships for outstanding students in Meizhou City. She added that the signing of MoU with JYU during this visit will further promote the strengths of the Meizhou overseas Chinese, and materialise more interactions and exchanges in line with the Belt and Road initiative. The Vice Mayor also extended her gratitude to Tan Sri Hew’s support and concern towards the education in the city and JYU. Through the academic activities and exchanges, Zhang hoped Meizhou and UTAR would seek closer partnership and explore broader collaborative opportunities in the future.

Tan Sri Hew thanked the Vice Mayor for welcoming the UTAR delegates and said, “I hope the collaborations and exchanges under the partnership between Meizhou and UTAR will be very fruitful. This partnership does not only support the internationalisation of JYU, but also to share resources between UTAR and JYU, as well as to contribute to the inheritance of Hakka culture. Besides, Prof Ewe on behalf of UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, expressed the interest to collaborate with JYU and anticipate the implementation of the plans in the foreseeable future.

The UTAR delegates were accompanied by Chairman of Meizhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese Tang Zhiping, Vice Chairman Zhang Yinghong, and Secretary General and Office Director Cai Yuwen during the visit in Meizhou, China.
