Public Service Career Talk

The Department of Alumni Relations and Placement and Chancellery, in collaboration with the Public Service Chinese Community and Persatuan Belia Xiang Lian Malaysia, organised a career talk on Public Service at Sungai Long Campus on 3 April 2018.

The series of talks aimed to raise the students’ awareness about careers in the Public Sector, benefits of being Public Servants and career prospects in Public Service. Present at the event were UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Prime Minister’s Department New Village Division Wee Li Ling, Ministry of Finance Lim Song Huat, Public Service Department Lee Cheng Kiik and Public Services Commision of Malaysia Chia Zi Sheng, Persatuan Belia Xiang Lian Malaysia Wong Siew Kuan, Tan Rong Xian, Yap Soo Fook and students.

In his welcome speech, Prof Choong said, “I am glad to witness this opportunity being given to our students and I hope to see more talks like this in the near future. This talk will give students an overview of the career opportunities available in the public sector. UTAR students are multicultural and multilingual, thus they are considered as suitable candidates in the public sector.”

Lim spoke about the administrative system, the governmental system, hierarchy of public service and the requirements of being a public servant. He also explained that the function of the PSC is to appoint employees, to confirm employees, to emplace on permanent or pensionable establishment, to promote employees, to transfer employees and to exercise disciplinary control over the employees. 

Lee shared with the students on the benefits of being a public servant while saying, “It’s not about the financial benefits, it is about your personal interest and the passion in what you do that enables you to retain your job.”

In Wee’s talk, she spoke about her experiences in dealing with the Chinese affairs and gave an introduction of New Villages in Malaysia while comparing the conditions of New Village in the olden days and today. She also mentioned on the functions and main roles of the department in developing the infrastructures of the new villages and some of the development programmes for new villages such as new village development as a tourist destination.

Cheah’s talk focused primarily on the online application for careers in civil services where students are able to check for job vacancy through http://www.spa.gov.my/web/guest/home. He then spoke about the requirements, job scope and job registration and its processes before concluding the talk.

The event was followed by refreshment before it adjourned.
