KPMG Audit Workshop

The Faculty of Accountancy and Management’s Department of Accounting organised an audit workshop. It was held by KPMG on 3 April 2018 at Sungai Long Campus.

Representing KPMG were Audit Manager Cheong Hoong Chin, Audit Assistant Managers Hing Lai Yee and Kum Wen Wei. UTAR was represented by FAM Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof David Ng Ching Yat, lecturer Tung Soon Theam, Dr Lim Wan Leng, Linda Azlinda binti Sahlan, staff and Accounting students.

The workshop aimed to provide students with a better understanding of the audit sector. The workshop focused on various topics covered within the audit industry. Among the topics covered were introduction to audit procedures, key terms and audit concepts, application of concepts, engagement setup, planning analytical procedure and risk assessment. Aside from that, Cheong spoke about career opportunities and internship programmes that were available at KPMG.

Cheong said, “An auditor’s objective is to obtain reasonable assurance on financial statements as a whole while making sure the financial statements are free from material misstatements. Aside from that, we need to form an opinion on financial statements and express opinion on the Auditors’ Report.”

He then added, “Aside from fulfilling the basic requirements such as attaining high CGPA, one needs to know the pros and cons of joining the audit firm. Everyone is very eager to join in this field but unfortunately, the turnover rate is also very high. The key quality is passion. The candidates need to passionate about what they do and they will succeed in the future. There may be challenges while working in an audit firm but having perseverance will enable you to overcome these obstacles and encourage you to learn to be better for the company.”

The workshop was followed by a group exercise where participants were required to solve questions and present their outcome to the audience.
