Representing UTAR Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design (DASD) and the Architecture Society, a total of 20 UTAR students were selected to participate in the [RE:D]EFINE 30th Architectural Student Workshop 2018 based on their quality in the diplomacy, leadership, artistry and performance. There was also an in-house team of about 10 students supporting behind the scene in various competition productions from UTAR DASD. Also present at the event together with the students were DASD Head Tan Kok Hong, Advisor Abd Muluk bin Abd Manan and Co-advisor Jeremy Tew Bun Teck.
The event was organised by Taylor’s University. It was held from 5 August 2018 to 9 August 2018 at Lakeside Campus of Taylor’s University. Themed [RE:D]EFINE, the main objective of the event was to offer architectural students the opportunity to share knowledge with the other local and overseas universities as well as to encourage them to challenge the nature and the limits of their creativity by reimagining architecture in different perspectives and experimenting with different mediums of creative productions.

The five-day workshop brought together over 500 architecture students from 24 local and 2 overseas universities. Among them were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), USM-KPT (POLIPD), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), UCSI University (UCSI), University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Syiah Kuala University (UNISYIAH), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (IIUM), Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS), Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL), Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara (KKTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Equator College, City University, Politeknik Brunei, and Syiah Kuala University (UNISYIAH).
The workshop challenged the students’ creativity with several competitions such as headdress design, floating totem design (sculpture on a lake), architectural workshop drawings, filmmaking, animated graphic essay, photo collage and performing arts. Other activities included sketching, solving mysteries, hands-on experience in model makings and installations. Professional talks were also conducted by architects and designers to not only advise the students but also to share their working experience.
Besides that, the workshop was comprised of open and closed competitions with sub-themes such as RE:SPACE, RE:PLAN, RE:PROGRAM, RE:PLAY, RE:EXPRESS, RE:IMAGINE, RE:IDENTIFY, and RE:PRESENT. UTAR Architecture students Ting Kee Ping, Law Tze Yong and Ananrajs Selvam won the second place for Design Part 1 RE:PLAN, while Chor Zhao Gen won the third place for Photo Montage RE:IMAGINE.

One of the UTAR representatives Violet Wee said, “I have made many new friends including a few from Brunei and Indonesia. It was a one-of-a-kind experience. I appreciate the chance to be involved in this workshop.” On the other hand, Chairperson of Representatives Eric Tan said, “It was a challenge for me to lead the team in this workshop. However, I would like to thank the advisors for this great opportunity. I hope I have delivered my best to everyone.”
