Travel Photography Talk

UTAR Photography Society of Sungai Long Campus, in collaboration with PCP Publications, organised the “Travel Photography Talk” on 31 July 2018 at Sungai Long Campus.

The talk aimed to provide a platform and an opportunity for the students to master and develop the techniques of capturing skillful travelling photos. The invited speakers for the talk were Chief Editor of Travelution Magazine Jessica Chan and Marketing Manager Elina Heng, who is also the contributing writer of PCP Publications.

At the talk, Elina Heng advised the audience to travel locally. “We tend to admire places of other countries but we often ignore the hidden gems in Malaysia. We should learn to travel locally rather than overseas as it is much cheaper and more convenient in terms of language, culture and so on.” As such, she recommended and introduced some places worth visiting in Seremban. In addition, she also introduced the means of transport and the places to visit in Taiwan.

Jessica Chan, on the other hand, focused on the travel photography like the landscape, framing, compositions, close-ups, long exposure and snapshots. She also advised the audience to not only emphasise on the photography skills when taking photos but to also give importance to the characters as it serves to trigger memories. She also listed things to observe before travelling; a travel photographer should take note of the weather and season, geographic location, brief history of the place, customs and traditions as well as food and diet. In this way, the photographer would know what to expect and the weather they may encounter. It is also to prevent them from accidentally offending the culture or tradition of a certain community due to the lack of understanding.

“Leave some room for a little sense of curiosity,” said Jessica Chan. She encouraged travel photographers to be more open-minded and not to be judgmental; instead they should learn to embrace difference if they wish to capture photos with characters.
