In conjunction with the Merdeka month, the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus organised the ‘Digital Poster and 3D Model Competition 2018’ followed by the prize giving ceremony on 15 August 2018.
Present at the ceremony were CFS Kampar Campus Director Tan Lee Siew, Deputy Director for Academic Phang Ying Ning, Heads of Department (HoD) Chan Jer Jing, Pakialetchumy a/p Antoni and Zurina binti Abdullah, Organising Chairperson Sree Amertharaj a/l Ratnam, CFS academic staff, participants and students.
After the singing of the national anthem, Sree Ameertharaj then welcomed the guests and participants for attending the inaugural competition’s prize giving ceremony. Thanking his co-chairperson Yuvashini a/p Salvamani, Sree Amertharaj explained that the digital poster and 3D model competitions were originally meant to be held separately on different dates. “However, we realise that it is important and timely to promote the spirit of nationalism and patriotism through the competitions in conjunction with the upcoming 61st national day celebration. The objective of Digital Poster and 3D Model Competition 2018 is to instil patriotism among students by revolving their arts pieces around national day and iconic landmarks in Malaysia. We also hope that students will understand the importance of independence made available from the sacrifices of our forefathers,” he said. Sree Ameertharaj also added that besides allowing the students to showcase their talents, creativity and innovation, the 3D model competition also aimed to increase their awareness of wastage and encourage waste minimisation.

Impressed by all the 35 eye-catching entries and also heartened by UTARians’ keenness in showing their love for the country, Lee Siew said, “In Malaysia, the value of patriotism has been continuously emphasised by many parties. Certainly, patriotism isn’t a short and enthusiastic show of emotion, but a lifetime commitment. We need to keep the love for our nation strong and take pride in Malaysia not only just in the month of August but beyond that as well. All of us have a role to play by giving a greater emphasis on the idea of unity in diversity in Malaysia.” The CFS Kampar Campus Director also extended her appreciation to the organising committee for the initiative and effort. She also urged everyone to echo 2018’s Merdeka theme “Sayangi Malaysiaku” (Love Our Malaysia) and celebrate the national day with pride.

According to the Digital Poster Competition’s First Prize winner Chia, his poster featured a love shaped Jalur Gemilang formed by fallen leaves with the tagline ‘One Nation We Care Since 1957”. “The fallen leaves scattered around the flag symbolise Malaysians who may be abroad but still love the country and stay united. The colour scheme was chosen because I wanted the poster to be a blend of both vintage and modern feel. The ‘BEBAS’ font brings out the modern touch in the poster,” explained the Advertising student.

Advertising student Hao Yee’s poster illustrated cultural diversity as well as the value and importance of Independence Day. “The individuals of different races portray the cultural diversity of Malaysia which we should appreciate and value during the Independence Day. The National Monument reminds us to respect and honour the lives of those who have sacrificed for our freedom today. Besides that, the mixture of four colours, namely yellow, red, blue and white represent the country’s unity,” he presented and reminded that “We are different but we are Malaysians”.

“My poster features a lot of Malaysian elements such as the Jalur Gemilang, hibiscus, the Tugu Negara, the Petronas twin towers and most importantly, our Father of Independence Tunku Abdul Rahman. I wanted to bring out a message that these are elements which are uniquely Malaysian,” said Yuik Juin. The Advertising student also mentioned that she used airbrush painting technique which is uncommon but still can bring out a kind of uniqueness.

For 3D model competition’s First Prize winners, their winning model featured a base inspired by the “yin yang” concept. “The ‘yin yang’ symbolises harmony and that is how Malaysia is like. We also featured some hills and trees which symbolise Malaysia’s rainforests. The historic monuments and iconic buildings which are uniquely Malaysian are also featured,” said Yuik Juin, who also clinched the Third Prize in the digital poster competition.

Its base is the Malaysian flag and hibiscus while the decoration of egg shells in different colours represents the country’s multi-racial community. A few iconic landmarks such as the Petronas twin towers, Penang bridge and Mount Kinabalu were also seen from the model.
