Building accounting knowledge through CFS Accounting Quiz

With the aim of helping students to understand the creativity, critical thinking and teamwork that go into accounting, Department of Management and Accountancy of UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus successfully organised an “Accounting Quiz” on 31 October 2018 at Kampar Campus.

The quiz received an overwhelming response from students and it saw the participation of 50 groups.

The quiz kick-started with a preliminary round where all the teams were required to answer 50 multiple choice questions within 45 minutes. Five teams with the highest scores were selected for the final round. The final round saw an intense buzzer quiz battle among the five finalist teams. The finalists were tested with approximately 30 structured questions.

Present to witness the quiz were Director of CFS Kampar Campus Tan Lee Siew, CFS’s Head of Management and Accountancy Department Zurina binti Abdullah, CFS lecturers-cum-organising committee members Chan Wan Ling, E. Devagi and panel of judges, namely Lim Khiew Loon, Tsen Tzu Yee and Yip Mei Theen.

Zurina explained, “The Quiz is indeed a great opportunity for students to build their confidence and test their analytical skills and competency in accounting. It also serves as a platform for them to apply the accounting theories and knowledge that they have learnt in the classroom in a competitive mode. We hope through this programme, the students will stay motivated and acquire accounting knowledge and appreciate its importance in current economic trends.”

The champion of Accounting Quiz 2018 walked away with a cash prize of RM150 and certificates while the first and second runner-ups took home RM100 and RM50 respectively, with certificates. Two consolation prizes were also given out. All participants were awarded a certificate of participation.

2^nd Runner-up                   : Chin Pei Yee and Tan Yen Wei

“This competition was definitely eye-opening. We are glad to be involved in the quiz and we believe that this is able to spark students’ interests especially in the accounting field,” said the proud champs Beh and Chia.

Echoing their sentiment were Choo and Yem, who agreed that teamwork is fundamental and it is a good experience especially for students who are going to pursue an accounting programme.

Meanwhile, Chin and Tan enthused, “Although basic accounting knowledge is involved, it was an interesting event as students learnt to think and react fast which is very essential upon graduating and being exposed to the competitive business environment.”
