Consistently reaching out to Orang Asli

In the pursuit of expanding UTAR community outreach, the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) has organised a series of Orang Asli community service to give better exposure to UTAR students about the various communities in Malaysia.

This time it involved ninety-five students from the Faculty of Creative Industries and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It took place at three primary schools, namely SK (A) Bukit Kemandol in Jenjarom, SK Sungai Melut (A) and SK Bukit Tampoi (A) in Dengkil on 20, 27 October and 3 November 2018 respectively. The students went there to carry out mural painting to beautify the school compound, under the supervision of DSSC lecturers.

The Orang Asli community service was divided into three activities, namely primary school mural painting, gotong-royong and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project.

The Orang Asli community service then proceeded with two gotong-royong sessions which took place in Kampung Orang Asli Tanjung Sepat, Selangor and Kampung Bukit Payung, Alor Gajah, Malacca. The first gotong-royong was held on 3 November 2018 to clean Pantai Cunang, which is a part of the Orang Asli village. Meanwhile, the second gotong-royong session saw UTAR students putting their arms together to clean up public facilities such as balai raya and balai rawatan in Alor Gajah. Twenty-nine students were involved in the goodwill effort, supervised by three DSSC staff.

Other than lending hands to beautify schools and cleaning the areas, UTAR students also shared their knowledge in STEM with the Orang Asli community. Held on 24 November 2018 at Kampung Sungai Rasau Hilir, Puchong, nine UTAR students shared the fun and excitement of STEM with 20 Orang Asli children aged six to 13 years old. They conducted simple yet interesting experiments such as invisible ink, magic balloon and snake balloon. After all the fun, the scientific explanation behind every experiment was shared with the children.

This series of Orang Asli community outreach is the second initiative by DSSC in strengthening the connection with Orang Asli, following the successful “Art-craft Project” in July 2018.
