Developing a better understanding of bronchitis & acute gastroenteritis

A workshop titled “Paediatric Nursing Updates on Bronchitis & Acute Gastroenteritis” was organised by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Department of Nursing at Tung Shin Hospital on 30 November 2018.

The workshop aimed to discuss the updates on bronchitis and acute gastroenteritis, demonstrate related clinical skills and enhance effective communication techniques in nursing children. The workshop saw a total participation of 18 nurses from various departments.

In her opening remarks, Tung Shin Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Chin Yee Fong said, “Having this workshop can contribute to learning by stimulating interest and enjoyment. We have a team of experts who is going to share their knowledge and experiences that will enhance your Paediatric nursing care.”

The workshop then saw three talks titled “Bronchitis: Current Knowledge and Intervention in Children”, “Treatment and Prevention of Rotavirus in Managing Acute Gastroenteritis” and “Communication – Speaking to the Little Ones” presented by FMHS Department of Nursing Lecturers Shamala Baskaran, Thulasy Perumal andMagesvary Maruthiah respectively.

The workshop was followed by various hands-on activities on related procedures and a role-play session where two teams presented. The teams were assessed by the nursing lecturers on the ranking based on their performance. Each team walked away with hampers as a gift.

“The positive impact of learning is profound as the nurses attain enhanced practical and personal competence with awareness on the latest updates in the clinical nursing practice. It also provides opportunities to Department of Nursing (FMHS) to strengthen links with individuals and groups in the wider community to support and enhance continuing education workshops,” said FHMS Department of Nursing Lecturer Sheela Devi Sukuru.
