Study tour to CYCU, Taiwan

Among the many efforts of UTAR to provide a learning experience for students to realise their full potential and to develop skills and flexibility needed for the industry, study tours, such as the recent one to Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Taiwan, is known to be effective at helping students to improve their intellectual and personal developments.

The study tour to CYCU was jointly organised by the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) and Malaysia Taiwan Industry Academia Research and Entrepreneurship Centre, from 2 to 8 January 2018. It saw the participation of 14 students who were accompanied by Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) lecturer Kuek Thiam Yong.

Throughout the six-day study tour, the UTAR students were engaged in a new learning environment at CYCU when they attended classes on psychology, motivation, business and finance, and arts. Outdoor lessons were conducted through industrial visits to Hair O’right International Corporation and Magical Mushrooms Tribe Leisure Farm. Visits to the National Palace Museum and the National Taiwan Craft Research & Development Institute also benefitted the students with more understanding of the Taiwan culture.

“Apart from the opportunity to learn more about Taiwan, as a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biotechnology student, the trip to O’right was very insightful because we were able to understood better about the recycling concept, energy saving and naturalisation. As a company that provides healthy, low-carbon, and eco-friendly cosmetic products, I am deeply amazed by it. Their 100% recyclable bottle is well maintained with the highest quality and is safe from heat or chemical reactions. Although the visit to the Magical Mushrooms Tribe Leisure Farm was quick, it was equally educational as we learnt about the types of mushroom, the way it is grown and cultivated, the names and functions of the mushrooms,” enthused Loh Jit Kai.

He added, “The study tour has definitely assured me of the many opportunities for Biotechnology students and has helped me in deciding for a career. It was good experience learning in a different environment.”

“Arriving in Taiwan gave me a culture shock, because I was amazed to see how recycling was widely practiced in Taiwan. The night markets were clean but it was difficult to find a rubbish bin because the bins were actually recycling bins where the citizens were required to sort out the type of waste before throwing it into the respective recycling bins. It was something unusual to me but practicing it was actually a good experience,” said Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations student Wong Suet Ling.

She added, “The visit to O’right not only taught me about recycling, but it inspired me. In the future, I would want my company to practice recycling and be an eco-friendly company. The study tour was worthwhile.”
