The Makers Club of the Sustainable Development Club collaborated with the Department of Student Affairs and Green Campus Committee to organise a Community Awareness Campaign. The campaign was held at Sungai Long Campus from 24 January to 25 January 2018.

Bearing the theme ‘Go Green Campaign’, the event aimed to raise the awareness of maintaining the sustainability of the environment and ecosystem and the awareness of reducing carbon emissions and electric usage for a greener future. Various activities were featured at the campaign such as exhibitions, green games and Makers workshop.

Some of the campaign highlights were exhibitions on DIY furniture, landfill and pacific garbage patch as well as photography. Also present to spice up the event were several Non-governmental organisations (NGO)’s, namely the Green Living Society, Little Marios, MareCet, Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC) and EcoKnights.

The campaign also saw recycling activity which was done in collaboration with the Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Association. It aimed to preserve the natural resources and prolong the life of landfills by instilling the awareness of reducing, reusing and recycling among the students.

“Our campaign focuses on how human’s actions such as consumption and production contributes to the environment. The research shows that Malaysians produce 49,000 tonnes of waste per day and in another three years’ time, there will be an increase of five percent in rubbish dumping. In Malaysia, we use the traditional way to decompose the rubbish which is landfill. Landfill is a waste material disposal site. However, the disadvantage of this method is the production of methane gas and greenhouse gasses which can be very hazardous.  The people who stay around these areas will be largely affected. Currently, only five percent of the landfill is hygienic and clean in Malaysia. This is because it cost a lot for the Government to set up a facility to do this. Hence, it is difficult to produce a sanitary landfill,” said Go Green Campaign Chairperson Chin Yan.
