The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association – UTAR Chapter (IPRMSA-UTAR Chapter) successfully organised industrial visits for Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations students to Angkasapuri Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) and HEINEKEN Malaysia Berhad.
A total of 42 students, accompanied by Advisor of IPRMSA-UTAR Chapter Diong Fong Wei and Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) lecturer Chin Ying Shin, visited the Angkasapuri RTM on 21 November 2017. Meanwhile, on 30 November 2017, 40 students visited HEINEKEN Malaysia Berhad. They were accompanied by Diong and three other lecturers from FAS, namely Chin, Raphael Thoo Yi Xian and Pong Kok Shiong.
The primary focus of these industrial visits was to support and facilitate UTAR graduates to develop skills, abilities and passion for their future careers. The visits also provided opportunities for the students to get exposed to the working culture in the public relations agency and allowed them to learn real-time knowledge from the real industry players.
The visit to Angkasapuri was received and led by PR Executive of Angkasapuri RTM Noor Azura Abdul Halim. Throughout the visit, she provided information regarding the job scope and the broadcasting process of RTM. In addition to that, the students visited one of the TV1 programmes, namely Selamat Pagi Malaysia and took pictures with the national dodgeball players, Teh Wee Sheng, Yun Fang and Robert CK who were interviewed during the programme. The students also visited the radio stations and the Museum of Broadcast Communication situated at RTM which has a collection of filming equipment from the 1970’s.
Meanwhile, at the HEINEKEN Malaysia Berhad, the students were warmly received by its Human Resource Director Lim Kwan-Sek. Lim shared insights about pursuing a career with the company. Besides explaining about the history of the company, he also shared about the company’s vision and culture as well as what it means to be part of the global, independent and responsible brewer. Besides that, Lim also educated the students about HEINEKEN’s Asia Pacific Graduate Programme (APGP) which offers a two-year programme to selected candidates with opportunities to get exposed at different HEINEKEN operating companies in the Asia Pacific region.
Year One PR student Rachel Hor enthused, “I joined these visits to know more about the latest technology in the communication field and to keep myself updated with the current information. Also, to gain knowledge about the real working life of a PR practitioner.” She said, “RTM is the heart and mind of the communication field. It controls radio and TV programmes in Malaysia. It was truly an eye-opening experience because we had the chance to see how the filmmaking works and ON AIR live during the trip. Heineken Malaysia Berhad, on the other hand, is one of the largest brewery factories and the management is all well trained. They gave us an insight into what usually a PR practitioner do and provided a good explanation about Corporate Social Responsibility.”
