JUST Musical Night

UTAR Sungai Long Chinese Orchestra Unit (UTARSLCO) and Department of Student Affairs (DSA) jointly organised a Chinese Orchestra Concert on 24 June 2018 at Sungai Long Campus.

The theme of the concert was JUST, which represented a worthy cause of fundraising for righteous purposes. It aimed to raise funds for UTAR students’ educational development, the establishment of UTAR Hospital as well as for the purchase and upkeep of UTARSLCO’s musical instruments.

Present at the concert were UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Resident Conductor Dr Goh Hong Lip, UTAR Sungai Long Choir Club Instructor Osamu Moroe, Guest Performer-cum-UTARSLCO Advisor Tan Chun Yuan, Guest Performer-cum-UTARSLCO Officer Nurul Izwazi binti Mohd Nor, Organising Chairperson Bryan Lim Ming Heng, student conductors Sim Kuon Yaw, Lim Yen Ying and Por Jia Jun, UTAR students, staff and the public.

The event also saw the attendance of students from other school and universities, which included INTI International University, UCSI University, Orchestra Traditional UKM (OTUKM), University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus Chinese Orchestra (UNMCCO), Asia Pacific University (APU), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and SMK Taman Connaught.

Delivering his opening speech, Prof Ewe said, “UTARSLCO has a very talented group of performers who are very passionate about orchestral music and who are dedicated towards helping each other to work as a team and put up so many performances. They have come a long way since 2016 and I truly applaud their success and commitment.”  He also highlighted the importance of co-curricular activities and believed that activities such as tonight’s musical performance will help students to better prepare for their lives and careers ahead.

On the other hand, Bryan Lim expressed his gratitude to everyone for their kind support and presence. He said, “We are JUST a different Chinese orchestra comprising of a group of music-loving university students. We hope that our JUST 不一样 concert will give everyone a different perspective on Chinese Orchestra. We are just concert, but not just a concert.”

A wide range of music performed by UTARSLCO

A diverse selection of repertoires were performed during the musical night, including movie's closing credits “The Ecstacy of Gold”, song-poem “Lao Hu Mo Ya”, Gu Zheng’s junior quartet song “Chun Hua Wang Lu”, hit folk song “Ba Yue Gui Hua Pian Di Kai”, classical Chinese literature song “Hong Lou Mong Xu Qu”, national musical drama song “Yin Xiang Guo Yue-Da Qu”, traditional western song “Misirlou”, animation song “Da Yu”, love song “One Night in Beijing” and “wolves”.

The musical night also featured a mixed chorus performed by the UTAR Sungai Long Choir Club. The choir performed two songs, namely “Cantante Domino” and “When You Believe” under the conduction of Osamu Moroe. The night was also uplifted with a splendid performance by UTARSLCO and UTAR Sungai Long Choir Club together with special guest performer Nurul Izwazi, who presented an epic music called “The Wolf and the Moon”, which managed to cast exhilarating experience and affection into the hearts of the audience.

Established in June 2015, UTARSLCO aimed to gather people who share the same interest and passion towards traditional Chinese music. UTARSLCO does not only play traditional Chinese Orchestra but also combines the prevalent and modern element to it. The committee hopes that, through this concert, they can present a whole new image and change the traditional mindset of the public towards Chinese music by performing different types of music styles besides traditional Chinese music.
