UTAR’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Committee of Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) organised a talk titled “Ergonomics” on 27 June 2018 at Kampar Campus. Invited to deliver the talk was Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) lecturer Muhammad Noh Zulfikri bin Mohd Jamali.
Noh sharing his knowledge with the participants
The talk aimed to raise the participants’ awareness of proper positioning and postures in their daily activities in order to avoid Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD). Noh began his talk by explaining what is MSD and what causes it to happen.
“MSD refers to injuries that occur on any parts of a human’s body which affects the body’s movement or musculoskeletal system. When there is an increase in productivity with an improper tool, physical stress will be built on the body, which will eventually lead to MSD after a long period. The neck, shoulder, lumbar and wrist are parts that are more prone to MSD.”

He also highlighted that other than age and obesity, sitting with insufficient space for your legs, looking at a computer monitor that is placed too high or low and improper way of handling a computer mouse are few factors that can lead to MSD in a workplace. The most common symptoms of MSD are pain, stiff joints or numbness in the affected area. He said that taking short breaks in-between tasks or simply adjusting the height of the working surface and using anti-fatigue mats are a few simple and inexpensive ways to lessen the occurrence of MSD in a workplace.
Noh ensured that having knowledge of Ergonomics will be beneficial to the participants as it will help in reducing their injury rates during work, as well as their absenteeism, while improving their productivity. The participants were also invited to assist in demonstrating the proper way of lifting heavy and light objects, as well as a simple neck exercise that can be done anywhere at any time of the day.
