CFS organises educational trip

The Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus organised an educational trip for its students on 9 June 2018. The students were brought to visit the Fire Station at Kampar and Hup Teck Soy Sauce Factory at Gopeng.

The trip to the fire station aimed to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills to detect and extinguish a fire and learn the various functions of the firefighting equipment, whereas the trip to the factory aimed to provide insights into the process of making soy sauce using the traditional manufacturing process.

Upon arriving at the fire station, the students were assembled in a meeting room where Zahuri shared with them the basic fire knowledge. The sharing session saw students and lecturers actively raising questions related to fire safety. After the briefing, Zahuri demonstrated the various functions of the fire equipment on fire trucks. Both students and lecturers were given a chance to try their hands on operating fire hose under the guidance of the firefighters besides trying on the fire suits. It was a new experience for all the participants.

Thereafter, the participants were brought to visit a factory-cum-retail shop which was particularly known for its homemade recipe of preservative-free soy sauce. The factory was named “Hup Teck” which meant “compatible” in the Hakka language. Low Pak Tong, the founder’s eldest son, took over the business after his father’s death in 1983.

During the visit, Low briefed and demonstrated the making process of soy sauce and shared some insights about the industry. He also explained that the cycle of fermentation process takes about three months, depending on the weather condition. Despite the challenge of facing the unpredictable weather, they continued using the traditional manufacturing method to ensure the taste and quality of the product. According to Low, due to the limitation, they could not go for a mass production without compromising the quality of their products. Hence, they only do retail and most of their customers are their regulars.

These educational visits offered students and lecturers the opportunity to reinforce experiential and contextual learning besides enhancing their bonding with each other and improving their social and life skills.
