Eye screening for staff
The invited speaker for the talk was Dr Miswan Muiz Mahyudin who is currently a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH). THONEH is one of the oldest eye hospitals in Malaysia.
Dr Miswan at the talk
At his talk, Dr Miswan introduced and explained the structure of the human eye to give the audience a better understanding of how eye diseases are formed. He also shared about eye diseases that commonly occur among adults during the talk. He mentioned that eye discomfort, redness, tearing, blurring sight and itchy eyes are the usual symptoms of dry eyes. “Dry eyes happen due to the environmental factor. Once the air around us becomes dry, our eyes tend to dry up as well. Wearing contact lenses for long duration and staring at a computer screen for too long could also result in dry eyes. Hence, blinking is important to keep the eyes moist and clean. It acts like a wiper for the eyes,” Dr Miswan advised.
Besides dry eyes, the floater is another type of eye disease that is commonly encountered, where an illusion of small visible moving objects is seen. Retinopathy and Cataract are examples of severe eye diseases which could decrease vision in a long run and eventually cause blindness.
Dr Miswan also recommended a few eye surgeries that could help treat the diseases. For normal eye refractive error like long sightedness, short-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia, it can be corrected by undergoing lens opacification where a permanent lens is inserted into the pupil. Lasik is another refractive surgery where a laser is used to reshape the cornea. These refractive surgeries provide a long-lasting alternative to spectacles and contact lenses.
When asked about what can be done in order to preserve and protect eyesight, Dr Miswan suggested wearing spectacles with UV protection because most of the people nowadays have to face computers, mobiles and televisions which emits ultraviolet light. He also suggested consuming more fish oils and foods that are rich in Vitamin A and C in order to improve eyesight.
