A group of students from the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI), taking up Financial Communication subject, visited Malaysian Investor Relations Associations (MIRA) on 5 July 2018 at Bursa Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as part of their syllabus requirements. The students, namely Lee Sher Ling, Muhammad Akmal bin Marzuqi, Yap Xin Teng, Simran Kaur, Lim Jia Xiang, Julia Sunder Rao, Ng Ging Xia, Goh Pei Hwa, Lim Chui Jing and Nadia Natasya binti Ahmad Fadzwan were accompanied by their lecturer Raduan bin Sharif.

The visit aimed to fathom the job description of an Investor Relations (IR) practitioner and further understand how MIRA works in helping the public listed companies (PLCs) in their growth and report performance. The visit also aimed to provide a platform to enhance the students’ knowledge on the relevance of an IR practitioner to a corporate communication practitioner.

During the visit, talks were given by MIRA Senior Executive Muhamad Aizuddin bin Muhamad Ridzuan, IR unit Chairman Steven Tan Chek Chye and IR Officer Audrey Ho.Muhammad Aizuddin explained the concept of Mira and how MIRA assists the PLCs and their employees to perform better by attending seminars, motivational talks and training workshops. “The main role of MIRA is to communicate and develop the relationship between PLCs and investors as mentioned in the mission,” said Muhammad Aizuddin.

Steven Tan also shared his experience and knowledge about MIRA. “The most important thing about being an IR practitioner is to be as transparent as possible, timely and consistent in disseminating information and in task completion. A good IR practitioner will be noticed only if they provide accurate information to the PLCs, fulfil their expectation and build investor traction,” said Audrey Ho.

Audrey Ho also mentioned that in disclosing information to the shareholders, an IR Officer must depend on the management structure, disclosure policy, target audience and the platform used. She then continued, “Simplifying your messages is the most effective method because not all shareholders are in the business field. Identifying the shareholders will help IR practitioners to break down the message in a simpler form for their shareholders,” said Audrey Ho.

At the end of the visit, Chairperson Christine Zoe Sta Maria presented a token of appreciation to each of the speakers.
