Discovering entrepreneurship

More than a hundred audience listening attentively

A talk on the life journey of an entrepreneur was held in Sungai Long Campus on 24 July 2018. Titled “Entrepreneurship Discovery”, the one hour talk was co-organised by Faculty of Accountancy and Management, Unovate Centre and International Business and Global Economics (IBGE) Society.

Sharing the stories of his life was Co-Founder and Chief Sales Officer of RedONE Ben Teh Beng Hock. He shared about his childhood memories when he was still a boy, growing up in a small town called Pontian Kechil. Teh grew up in a big family where he had 10 siblings altogether. Although he was the youngest in the family, Teh was not pampered. “As a family living in kampong, everyone had to contribute to the family,” Teh said.

Teh classified his younger life as a “business discovery stage”. The glimmer of interest in business started to develop during his elementary years. He would buy marbles and sell them off to his friends in school. His interest grew stronger when he was at the university. He did a business by buying computer parts, assembling them and selling them. He was doing very well, to the extent, he became the first person to own a cellphone in his class, while ironically not having many people to call.

Later on, he shared about his life in RedONE journey from the beginning. “When I came into the office for the first time in 2011, there was only six staff. Now we have 300 staff and twelve officers nationwide. We grew exponentially.” His work was recognised by awards such as JCI CYEA Winner 2017, SOBA Awards 2015 and Sin Chew Awards 2017.

“Being different is what makes you stand out. If we (RedONE) offer a regular telecommunication provider plan, then we are just another plan provider and no one would even notice our presence. With our “Amazing 8” plan, we stood out of the crowd despite being a newcomer in the business back in 2011. After six years, we still have no telecommunication provider that can provide a lower price than our plan.”

RedONE is also pioneering the idea of making fundraising easier through an app. In the near future, schools and NGOs can benefit from One Charity, an app which allows alumni and public to contribute to their alma mater and institutions in need by a tap on their smartphones.

At the end of the talk, Teh also gave away some RedONE merchandises to the audience.

Present at the talk were redONE Head of Central Region Wallance Choong Kim Loon, Senior Business Development Executive Samantha Yap Mei-Ji, staff and students.
