Encouraging students to dream big

The movie sharing saw more than 200 UTAR staff and students in attendance

The director and the main cast of the local movie, Think Big Big, visited the Sungai Long Campus on 2 March 2018.

The movie sharing session saw the presence of the movie director Chiu Keng Guan or professionally known as CHIU. Six actors from the cast, namely Fabian Loo, Serene Lim, Vivien Oon, Keigrey Kam, Joann Lau and Moon Yoong were also in attendance to share their experience in the industry. UTAR staff and students were given a glimpse of filmmaking processes.

CHIU said, “This movie aims to reach the audience in a more intimate and personal fashion. One of the determining factors that the actors cast was their ability to present the characters in the story in which it allows the audience to better connect with the characters. A number of messages in this story were born out of my real-life experience and thoughts. We had dreams when we were younger, but as we grow older they seem to fade away. This story is a reminder to us to stay true to ourselves and dare to dream big. I wish this story will inspire the audience and the fellow students here to chase their dreams.”

Loo advised, “There are many challenges on the journey to our dreams. Being able to manage the problems we encounter and overcome the challenges can help strengthening our resilience to face greater challenges in the future.” Echoing Loo’s advice, Lim added, “It is important to set practical goals and do not be afraid to try new things.  Be courageous to explore new opportunities and always keep an open mind.” Besides, Oon who is a Broadcasting graduate and a radio host shared her experience in changing the path in her career. “It has always been my dream to be an actress though I started working in the media industry after I graduated. Later in the working occasions, I manage to realise my dream and play an acting role in this movie.”

“It is indeed a challenge to strike a balance between my academic and acting life. However, I am truly happy and satisfied to pursue my hobby and ambition at the same time,” said Kam who is also a Year-Three undergraduate. At the movie sharing, Lau talked about her experience working as an actress and a kindergarten teacher. She said, “There are many junctures in life when I wish to explore more opportunities. Playing a role in this movie has become one of the most memorable experiences.” Yoong enthused, “Being a plus-size girl is perceived unfit to be an actress. I have been criticised for my physical appearance, though I wish to showcase my talents on stage. However, with my determination to hold on to my goal, I have achieved my dream. Do not give up your dreams and stay true to yourself, and your dreams will come true.”
