UTAR officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with redONE Network Sdn Bhd on 12 March 2018 at Sungai Long Campus.

Also present were redONE Chief Marketing Officer Danny Chin Kok Leong, redONE Head of Business Intelligence Jacky Kho Lian Heng, redONE Head of Central Region Wallance Choong Kim Loon, Senior Business Development Executive Samantha Yap Mei-Ji, redONE Chief Operative Officer Tee Yew Yaw, Great PR & Media Agency Sdn Bhd Director Chuah Lim Poh Khian, UTAR Vice President for R&D and CommercialisationProf Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, Division of Community and International Networking Deputy Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Department of Chancellery Head Lim Swea Jen, Department of Consultancy & Commercialisation Head Ching Yen Choon, and Department of Student Affairs Assistant Manager Chow Keng Fatt.

“Most of the students in UTAR are from the middle-class family and they require support from companies like redONE. This effort goes further to develop entrepreneurs in the telco industry. More importantly, they will be able to have some real-life experience. I believe this kind of partnership will be very beneficial to our students,” Prof Chuah said, supporting the idea of providing an alternative source of income for the students.

Meanwhile, Teh deliberately shared on how the partnership can benefit UTAR students. He said, “Our redONE Telcopreneur Programme is designed for students to allow them to learn more about enterprising. It provides them with the understanding of what entrepreneurship is all about. We hope, by setting up a kiosk here, we can train and share with them the skills and knowledge on how to be good entrepreneurs. It is often difficult to find a Chinese speaking staff, hence setting up a kiosk in UTAR would indeed be a wise choice because its majority population is made up of Chinese. The kiosk will allow them to experience marketing and customer service while generating additional income without the need to travel outside the Campus.”

Other than providing work experience, Teh also seeks to help with fundraising for UTAR. He said, “We want to change the way fundraising is made. We will be launching an app for fundraising and we will put all 1300 Chinese schools in Malaysia in the app. You can donate your money to the school of your choice through the app, and we will definitely put UTAR in the app as well.

We are also giving away free SIM card packs to more than 20,000 students with RM16 data for the first 12 months. For every amount they reload, a total of four percent will be donated to the University. All these reloads can roughly total up to RM400,000 to RM500,000 a year, providing UTAR with a passive fund,” Teh continued.

redONE Network Sdn Bhd was established in 2012. It was the first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) to provide mobile Postpaid services by using Celcom Axiata’s fast and reliable 5-star network infrastructure. Today, redONE does not only focus on postpaid plans but also prepaid plans because it wishes to cater everyone from all walks of life.
